Chunky Monkeys & Skinny Minnies: How does your diaper fit?

If you have multiple children of different builds then you've likely discovered that different cloth diapers fit different babies.  Same with clothing brands so its not a surprise.  With 6 kids who have ranged from super fat to chubby, average and slim babies; I have learned this lesson well.

Chunky Monkeys
Your chubby, thunder thigh or Michelin baby may not fit some diaper cuts.  A plus sized baby needs a diaper to match his build.

A diaper with a longer rise rise to reach around his thighs,  a wider crotch for poop leaks and a wide square tab (little more thigh room).  I draft my own patterns.  For monkey I cut a 7 inch crotch (that includes seam allowance).  If I had made his CD's os from a infant age I'd have done 6in I think (we use prefolds in the early months though). Longies and shorties of wool or fleece will give a comfy fit at the legs.  While the right pul cover may fit fine; tpu's lack of stretch will become to snug very quickly.

Skinny Minnie's
Your Petit, skinny, slender lil one needs a diaper for her slim little build.  Otherwise its all coming out the gape in the back and legs.

Cross over wings are a good idea for a secure tummy fit.  5 inch wide crotch and high elastics up and around the legs.  A hybrid shell with snap in or flap style soaker will fit well as fleece is stretchy for a snug fit.  Soaker style wool covers will give good leg leak protection also.
I have used tpu for my slim and average build babies as a nice alternative to pul.

Play around with your patterns aiming for that great fit cuz not all babies fit the same cut. If your using flats or prefolds you will be simply folding to fit.

Below: monkey in his wide, long square tab cut.  He is a thunder thigh baby with a 9 3/4 in leg length and a 11 in wide thigh.
